Snowballing it forward...

SnOw...M...G., it's the SnowPacolypse, SnowMaggeden, SnowLacouste, Winterruption, Snowverkill, Snowtoriously B.I.G., or simply the Blizzard of 2011. No matter what you call it, the snow has fallen and it has been massive.

We stayed up late last night watching the snow fall and listening for the Thundersnow. This is what we saw...

This morning we woke to everyone's homes being covered in snow. About mid morning the neighbors all started to make their way through snow covered doors and start trying to clear paths to be able to get around.

All of the kids were so ready for their snowday! They joined up at the snow covered, iced over lake to have some fun. They dug tunnels, threw snowballs, did some sledding, and just had as much fun as they could handle together.

The young kids weren't the only ones to get out and have some fun.
We took a walk down to the lake and saw that many of the adults were out shoveling and/or snowblowing their drive ways.

One of the homes was a single mom of teenagers and they were all out their shoveling together. Pretty soon some of the men in the neighborhood came over and helped out. When they were all done with that driveway, they went to the driveway across the street. Then more neighbors came over to help and more and more neighbors.

Pretty soon we had so many people out shoveling and blowing the snow that we had to split up and do three driveways at one time. My favorite moment was when a single foster mom came to the door shocked that 10-12 people were all clearing her driveway and clearing a path to her door. She told us that she had just picked up the phone to call a friend to come over and help her be able to get out her backdoor. She was so thankful for all of the help. Later when we were all moving on to a different house, she asked me if all the people that were helping lived on our block. I was able to tell her "Yes, it was all your neighbors helping you and each other."

It was a lot of work, even with all of the people that were there helping, but we all agreed that we were also having fun together. I heard comments like... "Who put all of this together anyway?" and "Who says suburban community is dead?" and "Who's next, any other driveways need clearing." and even this one..."While we are at it we can keep going down the block and clear the parking lot at the local Martini Bar." It was a good time for everyone! One of our neighbors mentioned how impressed he was that the teenagers were out there and got this all started. He said that when he was their age he wouldn't have even attempted to go door to door and do that for others.
So while the news played on our T.V. about how this blizzard has been so detrimental to so many and how the ground hog was unable to even check for his shadow, our little corner of the world worked together to make it a great experience and help each other.

Now Looking forward to our Neighborhood Super Bowl Party on Sunday!

Later in the early evening we heard that one of our friend's husband was still out of town and she had not been able to get all of her driveway shoveled due to being pregnant. My awesome husband immediately responded to our friend in need. Upon getting to her house he quickly realized this was a bigger job than he could do on his own. In true Burton Street fashion, two of Our neighbors drove across town to help out at a house where they really don't even know the family. I am so thankful for a community of awesome people that call each other neighbor and friend.
